The Honors Program serves self-motivated and qualified students by providing exceptional and intense learning experiences in classes that are usually highly interactive. The Honors General Education Core Curriculum consists of a group of courses already approved for transfer to campuses of the University of California and the California State University. In this curriculum, students encounter a range of historical, technical and cultural points of view.

Help out with annual Youth Hockey Tournament!

When - February 13-16, 2015

From the California State Games:

 

"The California State Games is looking for volunteers over Presidents Day Weekend to assist with various aspects of their Annual Hockey Tournament. Event will take place at all 4 rinks in San Diego (La Mesa, Mira Mesa, Carlsbad, Escondido). Duties include checking in teams, reporting scores, organizing players and teams during Opening Ceremonies, and handing out medals to the winning teams. The Cal State Games Hockey Tournament offers a fun enviornment, great hockey action, and lots of smiling faces throughout the weekend."

Seeds Greenbag Series: Lunch & Learn Days at SDSU/UCSD

This February, the Mesa College SEEDS Program Coordinators will work with high school SEEDS liaisons consisting of science teachers and guidance counselors at Mission Bay High, Madison High, and Clairemont High. Each high school will select 20 seniors (and potential Mesa SEEDS Scholars) to join us for a Greenbag Series at San Diego State University and UC San Diego. 

 

Friday, February 20th at SDSU: 

 

Here's what the SEEDS Coordinators and Mesa College Honors volunteers will do- 

 

-Arrive at 8am and go on a mock tour with the SDSU Greenbag Coordinator, Thelma Chavez (Center for the Advancement of Students in Academia);

-Welcome approximately 60 high school students at 8:45am (location, map, parking permit will be provided);

-Lead a group of 10 high school students on specific tours (see attachments);

-Lead the groups back to Scripps Cottage for lunch (Panera box lunch will be provided);

-Help students get back on their buses at 12:30-12:45.

-Wrap up at 1:00

 

SEEDS SDSU Visit Agenda

 

This would be an incredible opportunity for Mesa Honors students to become familiar with various Biochemistry/ International Business / Geography faculty, Environmental Science & Sustainability programs, and facilities at SDSU this Friday. It’s not only a chance to network, but also a leadership opportunity that stands out on resumes, CVs, and college applications.  

 

Additionally, UCSD will be hosting another Green Bag Lunch on Friday, February 27th

SDSU Leadership Summit

This spring semester San Diego State University will be hosting their 6th annual "SDSU Leadership Summit". A leadership conference for surrounding colleges to attend. The theme will be "Leadership starts here". There will be keynote speakers, and workshops to help build and enhance leadership skills including networking and public speaking. The attire for the event is business casual, which means no tank tops, shorts or jeans. Lastly, lunch will be provided on the day of the event.

 

Date: Saturday, February 21, 2015

Registration Fee: 30$ + processing fee

 

Lunch will be provided. Anyone who is interested in attending the conference, please follow the link below and register as soon as possible.

 

* The Mesa Honors Club will gladly reimburse the registration and processing fee of any Honors Student that provides proof of attendance. If you would like to attend the conference but need assistance paying for the cost up front, please email Honors Club President Pedro A. Cruz at pedrocruzis@hotmail.com. All students intending to be reimbursed should also contact Pedro A. Cruz at least 1 week prior to the leadership conference.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Needs Volunteers

The AFT needs volunteers (preferably those with an interest in the important issue of adjunct faculty rights (their teaching conditions are *your* learning conditions!) to sit at a table and hand out info the week of February 23rd, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday between 10:00am and 2:00pm. It will be a learning experience as well as an opportunity to fill out your Honors Completion Form!

Calling All Dog Lovers! Volunteer for San Diego K9 Cancer Walk

Our K9 Cancer Walk series gives dog lovers everywhere a way to fight back, and help our canine best friends live longer, healthier, cancer free lives. 10th Annual Pacific Coast Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

Mesa Research Conference

A word from the organizers:

 

"San Diego Mesa College will offer its First Annual Research Symposium featuring undergraduate research on Friday, May 8, 2015. All participants will be asked to give poster presentations of their research projects, however the format may vary for department-specific symposia. Awards will be given to the best research presentation in each of the three major divisions: Descriptive, Analytical, and Experimental. All students are offered advice on how to represent their work in poster format -- please contact Dr. Shahrokh Parvini at sparvini@sdccd.edu to make an appointment."

SEEDS Scholar Program Video Festival

The SEEDS Scholars Program is providing an opportunity for Mesa College and local high school students to receive recognition and win scholarships. We ask for you to share this opportunity with your fellow students.

 

What?

Teams will create short YouTube videos that educate viewers about one of SEEDS’ themes and at least one alternative that could improve society, in respect to the theme. $1000 in scholarship prize money. Awards issued in High School and College divisions.

  

What are the Themes?

Global Food Security

Hunger

Sustainability

 

Who?

Students from San Diego Mesa College, Clairemont High School, Mission Bay High School and Madison High Schools.  NOTE: cash awards are restricted to current and future Mesa students.

 

When?

Videos must be posted to YouTube by April 1st. Team rosters should be submitted by March 18th. We hope that you will share this opportunity with your fellow students.

What is SEEDS?

The “SEEDS” Scholars Program (STEM Engagement for the Enrichment of Diverse Students) is designed to increase the number of Hispanic students pursuing future graduate degrees by providing a firm foundation of advanced knowledge and skills in STEM-related fields (science, technology, engineering, math), beginning in the first two years of college. SEEDS is funded by a USDA-NIFA Hispanic Serving Institution grant. The project provides a range of supports to students, including a $40,000 scholarship.  

 

The SEEDS Video Contest is sponsored by the Mesa Foundation.

Honors Research Symposium at Stanford
